Carnitine promotes a healthy heart

The heart is an incredible organ, despite being the size of your fist and weighing only around 300 grams. It beats 100,000 a day i.e. around 3,000,000,000 times a lifetime, which could be interpreted as the equivalent of the capacity of 60 car engines and pumps 7000 litres of blood to our 1500 kilometre long vascular circulation daily. First the blood travels through the aorta and from there is goes to head to toe through increasingly narrow vessel networks until it reaches the smallest capillaries, which are around 130,000 kilometres in length.

If these vessels are clean and free of deposits, the heart can fulfil its duties for 120 years or longer. If one or more of the larger coronary arteries gets blocked e.g. by thrombosis or if there is tension in the heart muscle (myocardium) this can lead to a heart attack.

Cardio-vascular diseases are still among the main causes of death and around 350,000 people a year have a heart attack. More than 30 percent of these die from it.

Heart attacks are often due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Obesity is not the only cause, as smoking, regular alcohol consumption, diabetes, poor blood count as well as oxidized LDL cholesterol, high CRP, vitamin B6, B12 or folic acid deficiencies, lack of mobility or exaggerated amount of endurance sport, high blood pressure and long-term stress are risk factors. They can lead to infections in the vessel walls which are responsible for the development of the dreaded arteriosclerosis and over-acidity in the body. The fact that the muscle-cramping heart can cause an infarction is far too often overlooked.

Men should reduce their waist circumference to a maximum of 102 centimetres and women to 88 centimetres. Train your heart by way of moderate cardio exercise. Put a stop to chronic inflammations such as in the gums for instance. Make sure you consume sufficient micronutrients: vitamins C and E prevent the buildup of dangerous fatty radicals. Potassium and magnesium improve oxygen supply in the heart, can lower blood pressure and help in cases of cardiac arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbance). L-carnitine nourishes the heart so that only fats can be used as an energy source.
